Not a typical air museum - you get to touch and walk in an astounding away of military planes and support vehicles - they're not housed in a museum but right on the tarmac of the airport.
Awesome tour, both Brad's we're phenomenal!!! Was stationed here with VW-3 in '56-57. All 6 of us were enthralled with the stories these gentlemen have to share about the planes & equipment. Hands-on experiences to add to memory-bank.
The Pacific Aviation Museum doesnt allow rthe climbing of our aircraft except one of the helicopters bec its a safety issue
The two times we've been there, the staff has graciously opened, explained each of the planes and some of the fascinating history of each one. The staff really enjoys children, and as long as the little ones aren't damaging things, they encouraged them to touch and feel all the switches and knobs. They even gave our children a real helmet to put on for sitting in the A-4.
I highly recommend a visit to this unique place
Sit in the pilot seat of an UP-3A Orion and look in the bomb bay for the sticker for how to mount a 'special' bomb (a euphemism for an atomic bomb) . Slither through the opening hatch of a tank. Walk through the a vast cargo plane. Sit in the seat of an A-4 fighter, and get roam around a sea-stallion. If you're gentle, you can mess with the switches and pull on the yoke/cyclic.
You'll defiantly want to call ahead and schedule a time with the staff for the tour - the museum is not always staffed and it's a bit rustic but in a good way - it seems the spend all their money of preserving and procuring awesome planes.
A must see if your on the West side of Oahu!
Oddly enough the restrooms are some of the cleanest on the island and made to look like what you'd see in a Air Force base. Be sure to poke your head in the Ready Room - looks like what you'd see on an aircraft carrier.
We enjoyed our visit, Brad one of the docents was a great host. We started our tour in a Humvee which brought a big smile to our ten year old grandson. Unlike most museums you are able to enter the aircraft, touch the controls and sit in the cockpits. Barbers Point was a Naval Air Station and Brad shared a lot of the history with us as well. Also many movies have been filmed there and even one set being constructed at the time of our visit. The movie will also star some of the aircraft at the field. Don't miss.
