I left from the store and went straight to Makaha Beach to test drive this new board. As I got in the water I realized that my feet were really sore from the beating I took yesterday at Sandy’s Beach, this limited the effort I could put toward kicking for waves. What I found was my new board has no problems hooking up on two foot waves at Makaha, even with me only putting moderate effort into finning. The board is also very fast having no issues staying with the wave.
Today I felt the need for a new bodyboard. The one I have been using was not as buoyant as I would like it to be, making catching waves very challenging. I went to this HIC shop and was surprised at the experience I had. First, as I entered the store I was greeted with a friendly hello from the staff. The next thing that surprised me was the broad selection of bodyboards I found, they were well organized and easy to sort through to make a selection. An employee approached me asking if I needed any help, I quickly explained what had brought me into the store today. I told him that I was having issues catching waves with my current board and I felt it was due to buoyancy. I am 5’7” so I need a short board, but I am also 200+ pounds of mostly dense muscle. The employee (Pono) was very in tune and understanding of my problem. During the course of our discussion I had told Pono that I was only on the island for a few months and then I would be going back home to North Carolina. Pono was knowledgeable about the geography and waters in NC. This proved to be very helpful while we discussed what board would be best for here and back home in colder water. He kept having to excuse himself as there were several other customers in and out of the store that also needed tending to, he was very professional about the way he managed this back and forth. I was not being very fast to make my decision, in all I was probably in the store close to an hour; discussing; sorting; and eliminating boards. Once I made my choice of board and leash Pono assisted and allowed me to install the leash, I thought that was great. Lastly, He gave some advice on some sunscreen that he had experience with, so bought some of that as well.
I am very happy, Pono did a great job solving my problem. I can’t wait to find a good wave to get into next weekend. Big thumbs up to HIC today!
